Pancreatic Cancer Europe (PCE) is pleased to announce the composition of its new Board of Directors, a dedicated group of professionals and patient advocates committed to advancing pancreatic cancer research, policy, and patient support across Europe.
Meet the PCE Board of Directors
Chairperson: Alfredo Carrato (Spain)
Alfredo Carrato is Emeritus Professor of Medical Oncology at Alcala University and Director of the Research Group on Pancreatic Cancer at Ramon y Cajal Research Institute – IRYCIS. He is also a key member of the Spanish Network of Cancer Research – CIBERONC. As Chairperson of PCE, Professor Carrato continues to bring his extensive expertise in oncology and pancreatic cancer research to drive forward the mission of the organisation.
Vice-Chair: Patrycja Rzadkowska (Belgium)
Representing Digestive Cancers Europe (DiCE), Patrycja Rzadkowska is a psychologist and psycho-oncologist currently working in an international company. Having been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer at the age of 25 in 2017, she is a passionate Patient Expert and Advocate dedicated to improving the lives of those affected by the disease. In her role as Vice-Chair of PCE, she plays a crucial role in ensuring that the patient voice remains central to PCE’s initiatives.

Eithne Costello (United Kingdom) (New Board Member) Eithne Costello is a Professor of Molecular Oncology at the University of Liverpool, where she leads research efforts in pancreatic cancer diagnosis and early detection. She heads the Cancer Research UK-funded UK Early Detection Initiative for Pancreatic Cancer (UK-EDI), focusing on identifying biomarkers for early-stage disease. She has played leadership roles in European cancer research collaborations and has served on advisory boards for leading cancer organisations.
Giovanni Marchegiani (Italy) (New Board Member) Giovanni Marchegiani is an internationally renowned pancreatic surgeon and researcher. He serves as an Associate Professor and Attending Surgeon at the HPB and Liver Transplant Surgery unit at the University of Padova Hospital. His expertise spans clinical management, novel surgical techniques, and research on pancreatic cancer. With over 300 peer-reviewed publications, he is recognised as a leading expert in pancreatic surgery and oncology.
Ilse Rooman (Belgium) (New Board Member) Ilse Rooman is a Full Professor at Vrije Universiteit Brussel and Head of the Laboratory of Medical and Molecular Oncology. She has extensive experience in pancreatic cancer research, with a strong focus on translational research and early detection strategies. As Program Director for Pancreatic Cancer at the Anticancer Fund, she has overseen innovative clinical research projects and played an active role in European policy and advocacy initiatives.
The new Board will work collectively to further PCE’s strategic goals, including advocating for increased pancreatic cancer awareness, promoting research and innovation, and ensuring access to high-quality care for patients across Europe.
With a combination of leading researchers, healthcare professionals, and patient advocates, the PCE Board of Directors remains steadfast in its commitment to fighting pancreatic cancer and improving patient outcomes.
