On 28 April 2026, Pancreatic Cancer Europe hosted a high-level public awareness event in Valletta, titled “Pancreatic cancer: how to make a difference for the next decade.” Delivered with the support of the Ministry for Health and Active Ageing, the event placed public awareness at the heart of efforts to improve outcomes for pancreatic cancer across Europe.
A Public Awareness Event with Purpose
This public awareness event brought together policymakers, healthcare professionals, patient advocates, and organisations to exchange perspectives and strengthen collaboration. At its core was a shared recognition: raising awareness is essential to driving earlier diagnosis, improving access to care, and ultimately saving lives.
As PCE marks its 10th anniversary, the event served as both a celebration of progress and a reminder of the urgent need to continue building awareness around a disease that remains one of the most challenging to detect and treat.

The public awareness event featured a distinguished line-up of speakers who contributed insights across research, policy, and patient advocacy.
The opening remarks by Jo Etienne Abela, Minister for Health and Active Ageing, set the tone for the day, highlighting national commitment to improving healthcare outcomes. Moderated by Glen Anthony Falzon, discussions explored both scientific advancements and lived experiences.
Expert contributions from Bruno Sainz (Instituto Ramón y Cajal de Investigación Sanitaria) provided important context on pancreatic cancer research, while a panel featuring Patrycja Rzadkowska, Antonella Cardone, and Gertrude Buttigiegemphasised the critical role of patient voices in raising awareness and shaping policy.
Turning Awareness into Action
A key focus of the public awareness event was translating awareness into tangible change. Discussions highlighted the importance of:
- Increasing public and professional understanding of pancreatic cancer symptoms
- Reducing delays in diagnosis
- Strengthening healthcare systems and policy responses
